Pamela "Pam" Jones

On September 28, 2023, 72-year-old Pam Jones of Dow passed away peacefully in her sleep. Pam was born and reared in Alton, IL. She was a 1969 graduate of Alton High School where she majored in office occupations. While attending school, she worked at the Dairy Queen on Washington Avenue and for Dr. Marley and Dr. Vaugaman. In the fall of 1970, she entered SIUE graduating in 1974. While attending SIUE she worked at Lovejoy Library while paying her parents room and board.

In 1974 she also met the love of her life, Leroy “Lee” Jones, a teacher in the Alton School district. They were married 48 blissful years. He survives. In 1978 Pam went to work for SIUE School of Dental Medicine in the business and later in the reception offices. She retired after 30 years of service.

Being a daughter of a silver star recreant combat veteran who went ashore on D-Day and participated in the Battle of the Bulge in addition to being married to a U.S. Navy Veteran, Pam had a great love of our country. Watching the flag pass by or hearing the national anthem would often bring her to tears.

She also loved animals and rescued many strays and found forever homes for them which was often her own home. Her hobbies included traveling, gardening, sewing, painting, and crocheting.

Pam was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and June Groshart, her in-laws, Leroy and Martha Jones, her grandma Feldman, and a nephew, David Allen Grimes.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, David and Jean Grimes of Conway, SC, a niece, Jacquie Grimes of Conway, SC, a cousin-in-law, Linda and Col. James Liller of Colorado Springs, CO, a cousin-in-law, Thom and Rayma Barnhorn of Seminole, FL, a cousin-in-law, Colleen Jones of Minot, North Dakota, her dear friends, Joe and Chris Wilson, Richard and Pilar Steele, Gloria Gowin, Judy Ritchie and all the wonderful people she worked with at SIUE Dental School.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 12:00 noon Friday, October 6, 2023 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Treehouse Wildlife Center in Dow, IL or the Gary Sinise Foundation for Veterans, Franklin, TN. So sorry to hear of Pam's passing. She did a lot of good in her life- love of country, family and a place in her heart for strays. Rest in peace Pam...
