She was born in St. Louis, Mo., on Feb. 28, 1951. She was the daughter of Charles and Maryella Heitz. She married Frank Zappulla on May 17, 1980. He survives.
Also surviving is a daughter, Maria (Adam) White of Cottage Grove, Minnesota; a son, Frank (Tony) Zappulla of Clayton, North Carolina; a daughter, Anna Zappulla of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a grandchild, Caroline White; a sister, Kathie (Jim) Woeltje of Jackson, MO; and a brother, Joe (Julie) Heitz of Godfrey.
Susie was a graduate of the University of Kansas. She taught school in Virginia and in 1991, she moved to the Outer Banks in North Carolina with Frank and her three children. She was a Dare County middle school teacher for 11 years. After retiring, Susie was an interior decorator and enjoyed spending time with family and friends and working in her garden.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014 at 3:00 pm, at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.
Donations may be made in her name to the MD Anderson Hospital of Houston, Texas or the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.
